Nokia Network’s MBit Index study reveals that mobile internet traffic in India has grown by as much as 74 per cent in 2014 as compared to that of 2013. The 3G traffic has basically been the moving force as the traffic on this score has increased to more than double – 114 per cent. The 2G growth has however not been as spectacular - it is around 41 per cent.
The mobile internet traffic, in terms of actual quantum of data, grew from 49 PB (petabyte) in 2013 to 85 PB in 2014. Mr Sandeep Girotra, Nokia’s Head of India Region disclosed: "On an average a 3G subscriber in India consumed three times more data than a 2G subscriber. 3G is driving the data growth but 2G growth is stabilising. Based on ecosystem, I feel 2G is going to be there in India. Now operators need to further strengthen their 3G network.”
In so far as mobile internet usage is concerned, it would be interesting to note that the A category service areas -- Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu -- had higher 3G as also overall data usage in comparison to that of the metros. In fact, the Thus 3G data usage in these service areas increased by 129 per cent in 2014 compared to that of the previous year. Incidentally, it is noticed that the 3G coverage gap has been reduced to less than 10 per cent as at the end of 2014. This gap was about 20 to 30 per cent in 2013.
