While there are quite some free scanner apps in the Android Play Store, quality scanners are still a far cry. On browsing through the list of scanners, one does come across some really good mobile scanners (premium version) for Android smartphones, but these are available with a price tag. The CS CamScanner is an example under this category. It contains OCR as an additional feature that converts the scanned picture into editable text.
It is in this context, we wish to introduce a free scanner- available in the Play Store - which not only scans but has the added capability to convert it into editable text through its OCR feature. The app called ‘Text Fairy (OCR Text Scanner)’ has received favourable rating, presumably for its simplicity and user-friendly features. The app not only converts an image to text, but also corrects the viewpoint of the image. The extracted text is edited and made ready for copying either in the clipboard for use in other apps or converted into a PDF file. Interestingly, the app has the capability to recognise printed text of over 50 languages.

The limitations are not many: the app will not be useful for handwritten text. Further, it works better with sharp pictures taken under good lighting condition. The text should be in black on white background. Notwithstanding these shortcomings, the app is indeed very useful for those who need to take down printed extracts for editing and sharing. Incidentally, the app is still being improved upon, and a few small flaws here and there can hopefully be taken care of shortly.
