In previous versions of Android there was no access to third party Apps. All Apps were not movable to SD Card. But last year Google introduced Storage Access Framework with Android 4.4 which allowed full access to files which are on SD Card. But that also didn't solve all the problems related to media files and also other files.
The Apps also required more space to store on SD Card. With the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop all these problems are taken care of. Android 5.0 consists of new API's that allows full directory access to third party Apps even on SD Card. These new API's brings full access to all directories for developers and users. The Apps create their own directories and read/write files in those App specific directories.
Android 5.0 also brings many features like new better notifications, sleek design, improved security and many more. These are front end features, but there is a lot of changes at the back end. One of the major changes among them is new API's. Currently these API's are added to developer preview version of Android 5.0.
