The American multinational company, Apple Inc., well-known for its consumer electronics like Computers and iPhones, etc. is reportedly entering automobile sector as well. The rumours are that the company is secretly working on an electric car. Reports from the Wall Street Journal and other sources indicate that hundreds of hands, including those working in Tesla, are being offered employment by Apple for an electric car design that has been kept out of public domain and is held as a top secret matter.
Apple has reportedly hired automotive engineers to work at a secret location close to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, fuelling rumours that the vehicle will be equipped with not only the usual navigational and communication equipment but will also have high-end utilities like internet and software services. Interestingly, Johann Jungwirth, who till recently headed the R&D unit of Mercedes-Benz joined Apple in September last. This gives added strength to the rumours. If there is any truth in the rumours and the reports, one may have to get ready for an Apple-made electric minivan that may as well be an answer to Tesla’s electric car.
The new vehicle is not likely to come up any time in the immediate future. While the hectic spade work going on, do indicate that Apple is serious on the project, it may ultimately decide not to proceed with the vehicle. If that is so, some of the technologies used in the electric car, such as advanced batteries, in-car electronics, etc. could come handy for the company’s other products, like iPhone and iPad. Since Apple has refused to offer any comment on the reports, it would not be possible to make further speculations on the issue, and as such the only alternative at the moment is to wait and watch.
