Creating and Securing Your Passwords

There will hardly be any computer literate in this modern age who will not be aware of Password or its use. Password is a secret word used by a person or a group of persons to prove his or their right to access information or a computer system or its data resources.

Thus, in this world of information technology, every computer user will have to necessarily deal with a password for activities like (a) opening of his computer (b) getting access to his protected documents (c) viewing or transacting Bank accounts, and so on.
Creating a password is an easy job, remembering it may be difficult. While creating a password please keep in mind certain basic tips. The first is to remember that a password should not ordinarily have less than 8 characters. The more the characters, the greater would be its security. Many people tend to use only the alphabets or numerical. The ideal way is to have a combination of both of them, and preferably adding a few special characters as well to make it stronger. The alphabets need not totally be in upper or lower case; it should rather be a mix of both

You should avoid using any user name, your own name, the company’s name, your vehicle registration number, your cell number or any other name or number that you come across regularly. It is advisable to avoid using name/know number altogether. Better still, do not use any word that one can get from the dictionary. Thus, to put it simply, the password should be at least 8 character long, comprising of alphabets (with combination of upper and lower ones) and containing digits and special characters, without giving any inkling of any word taken from the dictionary. A few examples could be - rH23*s%j Ac7k?21pU  8rU2?/fYh6 and so on.
The next question is: how do we remember our password? At the outset, it is suggested that each individual site should have independent password. Having a common password is fraught with hazards. Now, if you have ten different accounts, you will need to remember ten individual passwords. A major problem indeed!

One way to remember passwords is to relate the site-name and convert a few characters of your words into digits, and digits into words with special characters inserted in between. For example, if you are to create a password in respect of, say, Tokyo Bank Account No 7743, it could be something like this – tO7sev?bK* or *Tb/aFor3@ etc. These words may again be difficult to retain in memory. There are several other tricks too for creating and remembering passwords. One may alternatively retain the passwords in a secured place for retrieval when needed. Another option is to get open-source free password management tools and use them for keeping your passwords secured. The options are many, but one needs to use his discretion while going for a particular mode of securing his passwords.
