The Government of India has recently launched the Digital Locker in Beta Version – called ‘DigiLocker’ - which can be used for storing as also certifying and appending your Aadhaar-linked digital signature for sending documents through the electronic means. The DigiLocker is essentially a dedicated personal storage space that is linked to an individual Aadhaar Card number. The application can be used to store not only your e-documents but also the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI).
The objective of the DigiLocker is to enable an Indian citizen, resident of India, for storing all his Government-issued documents viz. educational certificates, passports. PAN card details etc. in a digital form through a system that would make it possible for him to get access without having to carry the documents in physical form. All that is needed to sign up for your DigiLocker are your (a) Aadhaar number and (b) the Cell No. registered with Aadhaar.

As a first step, you have to visit http://digitallocker.gov.in/ and sign up by entering your UID or Aadhaar Number and the characters in the captcha code. You will get an sms on your registered mobile number and the email ID, providing you the OTP. On entering the OTP and clicking validate, you are logged in to your page, where you get the dashboard through which you will be in a position to upload all your Government issued documents. The drop-down menu will facilitate choosing the right category for each of the documents.
The DigiLocker will not only minimize the use of physical documents, but will also authenticate genuineness of the e-documents. Thus, it will give secure access to documents issued by various Government departments. Additionally, it will reduce administrative overhead of Govt. departments thereby making it easier for individuals to receive services.
