With a view to making its position stronger in the race for driver-less automatic cars' development, General Motors (GM) plans to launch a new luxury car that will use an advanced motor control to practically drive itself on highways. GM will bring its first car in the next two years, which can communicate with other vehicles to stay away from accidents and difficulties concerning traffic bottle-necks, the Chief Executive, Mary Barra, disclosed on Sunday.
The United States' top seller of cars and trucks will offer Super Cruise, a hands-free cruise control, on an unnamed Cadillac in 2016. All the way, through automatic braking and speed control, Super Cruise will allow drivers to ride on highways without controlling the steering wheel. However, General Motors and other automakers have stressed that even with hands-free driving, the drivers will stay responsible and will need to be attentive on the roads. In the meantime, Internet search company Google Inc is working to develop fully automatic vehicles.
Cadillac declared that some of the 2017-models will be enabled with vehicle-to-vehicle communication facility. In 2016, GM will sell 2017-model Cadillac CTS sedan as a standard model that would be manufactured with vehicle-to-vehicle technology. The car can only converse with similarly equipped vehicles. The industry will however go for mass-production of the new-technology vehicles soon thereafter.
