A new feature that has been added by Google in Gmail will now allow the users to edit attachments containing Microsoft Office in the Mail Box itself. Gmail now provides a button called ‘Edit’ which converts the Microsoft Office documents automatically to Google formats like Google Docs, Google Sheets or Google Slides through its Google Drive.
Google claims that "With just one click on the new edit icon in Gmail attachments, you can automatically convert Office documents -- giving you the additional benefits of a single document to keep track of, access from anywhere (even offline!), and revision history," Thus, the document can be accessed from ‘anywhere’ and can even be accessed offline as it is stored in the cloud Google further stated that it has added into Google Drive import support for 15 new office formats, viz. dot, dotx, dotm, docm (for Google Docs), xlt, xltx, xltm, xlsm (for Google Sheets) and pot, potx, potm, pptm, pps, ppsx, ppsm, for Google Slides.
Those who do not wish to convert their files into Google formats will have to install a Chrome web browser extension, which when installed, can allow them to edit their office files in their original format directly. "Once it's in place, the users will have the option to convert the file by clicking on the pencil icon, or edit the file as is by clicking on the attachment card and selecting open from the top of the file preview."
