There are reports of late that Google with a view to enhancing experiences of its Google+ photos is acquiring the team associated with Odysee – an app known for photo back up and sharing. If the report is correct – and there are reasons to believe it is – Google+ would get a shot in its arms at a time when it is seen running for acquisitions in recent months. Incidentally, coinciding with the report, the app has disappeared from Google Play and iOS app stores.
In fact, there was news in the recent past that Google was mulling on a proposal of separating its photo service from Google+, and was contemplating to launch the former as an independent product. With this in mind, bringing in the folks behind Odysee could certainly be seen as a step toward this goal, with the team’s talent and technology utilized to help build out the new product.
Now, a few words about Odysee App developed by Nimbuz Inc. The company was founded by two entrepreneurs - Raghavan Menon and Shiva Jalagi – who had some exposure in the areas of algorithms, caching, embedded software, and networking. Odysee is known for its app that automatically backs up images from a smart phone to a desktop and makes them available to share with others. It aimed at providing an option to intelligently make photos and videos at their full quality based on likelihood of user access. It also gave offline access through the use of a catching process to some of the media. Odysee describes its vision “to be the easiest way for everyone to capture unlimited memories and access them everywhere” and states that its integration into the Google+ team means it can “continue to focus on building amazing products that people love.”
