In the world of internet, one usually comes across strange phenomena. And so it happened with Google. Only a few days ago, Google built a new tool - Password Alert Chrome Extension - in the fight against phishing, i.e. the fraudulent practice of sending mails purporting to be from a reputed entity to induce disclosure of sensitive data. The objective was to alert you when you have entered the Google account password in places other than accounts.google.com.
To put it simply, soon after the Password Alert is enabled, you will find an alert whenever you would enter your Google or GMail password anywhere outside Google with the warning: "Your Gmail password was just exposed to a non-Gmail page". Interestingly enough, within just 24 hours of the roll out of the Password Alert, Google had to issue an update blocking its exploit. The same researcher has now found that the new version too is not good enough, and has come up with another version to block the new version as well.
The latest version tries to circumvent the earlier one, which amounted to refreshing of the browser page after each password character is entered. Consequently, the browser gets unstable and the warning never gets displayed. The efforts are on way to resolve this problem and come out with a solution that could be acceptable as a credible answer to the menace of phishing in future.
