Google Chromecast – a digital media player in the shape of a dongle that plays audio video content on a HD television - became quite popular soon after it appeared on the electronic horizon some two years ago. Soon several players launched similar devices with almost the same technology under different brand-names. It was however realised that with limited bandwidth support, the device had its limitations, and was not as much useful as it was initially thought to be. A revised and upgraded version of the device therefore became all the more necessary.
It is in the backdrop of the above, Google has recently launched an accessory (Ethernet Adapter) which will make the use of Chromecast all the more easy and trouble-free. It provides the option to add a wired connection for weak Wi-Fi connectivity, thereby directly connecting to the Chromecast via USB cable. It would be useful when network router is close to an Ethernet port and near the TV. The adapter would also be handy in a hotel room or a conference room where Wi-Fi is not available. The power adapter now launched has dual functions – charging the Chromecast as also having provision for connecting to the Ethernet based networks. To put it differently, it runs both power and data to the Chromecast via USB once plugged in to an AC outlet and an Ethernet device.
The Ethernet connectivity would ensure that the line is available direct to the modem or router. This would ensure trouble-free playing of videos with little interruptions. While the device is now made available in the US, it is still to be launched in India. There are no words from Google about launching this in India soon. Let’s wait and watch – may be it comes here sooner than later.
