History Of Android Versions - The Android Dictatorship

(Last Updated On: 22nd Aug 2017)  Who among the users of smart phones are not aware of Android operating system. It is now quite well-known. But how many of us know the difficult terrains that Android covered over a period of a little more than a decade. 
Android History
Versions after versions - like the rising stars - emerged on the horizon of Android, and then forgotten soon thereafter. The present version of Jelly Bean (4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) is the latest among the long list of versions. The buck however does not stop here, since the next version of Android is coming up shortly - this month itself - and it is to be christened as Kitkat (4.4). Now many of us do not know all the various versions Android came up with. In the following lines, we try to trace the history of Android - from its first version of Cupcake (1.5) to the one coming up soon.

History Of Android Versions

Android 1.5 Cupcake
Android 1.5 (Cupcake)

It is the first and basic open source android OS version. Not so popular at that time.

Android 1.6 Donut
Android 1.6 (Donut)

It is the second android version OS, which brought searching of information under finger tips

Android 2.1 Eclair
Android 2.1 (Eclair)

It is third version of android OS and has brought the concept of widgets and home screens customization

Android 2.2 Froyo
Android 2.2 (Froyo)

It is the 4th version of android OS which brought moving of application to sd card concept. i.e MOVE TO SD facility.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

It is the 5th version of android OS that evolves that the concept of high end gaming in mobile. No need to buy any playstation

Android 3.0 Honeycomb
Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)

It is the 6th version of android OS specially designed for tablets.

Android 4.0 Icecream Sandwich
Android 4.0 (Icecream Sandwich)

It is the 7th version of android os and the most popular, user friendly, face unlock featured ROM. It strength the design and multi tasking.

Android 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 JellyBean
Android 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 (JellyBean)

It is the 8th version of android but a combination of three (4.1, 4.2, 4.3). A trend setter and graphics emulator.

Android 4.4 KitKat
Android 4.4 (KitKat)

It is the 9th and very popular android version. The name is given in partnership with candy bar called Nestle Kitkat. Its related data is present in the video below. 

Android Lollipop
Android 5.0 (Lollipop)

It is the 10th and most user friendly android version ever. The name is given from toffee called Lollipop usually loved by kids. Unveiled on June 25, 2014 at the Google I/O 2014 conference, it became available through official over-the-air (OTA) updates on November 12, 2014, for select devices that run distributions of Android serviced by Google (such as Nexus and Google Play edition devices).

Android Marshmallow

Marshmallow primarily focuses on improving the overall user experience of its predecessor, Lollipop. It introduced a new permissions architecture, new APIs for contextual assistants (first used by a new feature "Now on Tap" to provide context-sensitive search results), a new power management system that reduces background activity

Android Nougat
Android 7.0 Nougat

Nougat introduces notable changes to the operating system and its development platform, including the ability to display multiple apps on-screen at once in a split-screen view, support for inline replies to notifications, and an expanded "Doze" power-saving mode that restricts device functionality once the screen

Android 8.0 Oreo
Android 8.0 OREO

Android 8.0 is new and upcoming Android version recently announced at Google I/O 2017. It comes with various features such as Background app battery saver, autofill, Picture In Picture.
