Now a days Wordpress is the most widely used Open-Source blogging and content management tool. It is a CMS solution based on PHP and MySQL. This week we were developing a website using WordPress. While developing we reached up to 90 sub-menu items in WordPress.

When we tried to add more menu items the following problems occurred:
1. When we add more sub-menus after the limit is reached and click on save then only top 90 list will be selected and the remaining menus will be lost.
2. After clicking on save menu the main menu bar in the website will also disappear.
The solution to this problem is given in the steps below...

Method: 1 – How To Increase The Menu Limit If You Have Access To Root Files
Step 1: Access Root Files Using Windows Server
If you are using windows server then go to the root files of website you are developing by using remote desktop connection.
Step 2: Access Root Files Using Linux Server
If you are using linux server then go to the root files of the website you are developing using SSH Access.
In our case we are accessing the Root files using FTP.
Step 3: Provide Login Credentials & Access Root Files
Provide your login credentials using Filezilla and connect to your server.

Step 4: Open Php.ini File
Go to Program Files->PHP. Here find php.ini File->Right Click->View/Edit.

Step 5: Increase Max_Vars Files
Increase these characters:
  • Max_input_vars=5000
  • Suhosin.post.max_vars=5000
  • Suhosin.request.max_vars=5000
Initially these files limit may be just 1000.
Note: Also remove semicolon before these statements as semicolon means the sentence is commented out.

Method: 2 – How To Increase The Menu Limit If You Dont Have Root Access
Step 1: Open Filezilla
If you are using shared hosting then after opening Filezilla, Go to the website you are developing and open wp-admin folder. There Right click->Create new file->Name it as php.ini.
Step 2: Paste Below Files In php.ini
In php.ini paste the below files and save. This may solve the menu limit problem. Try these tricks and let us know.
  • Max_input_vars=5000
  • Suhosin.post.max_vars=5000
  • Suhosin.request.max_vars=5000
Note: Best contact your host provider if you are using shared hosting and request them to increase the limit.
