Latest versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox does not allow to install addons manually or addons which are custom made or unsigned. Probably, this is a good feature for novice user that helps them to block malware or virus from their browser. But you may sometimes need to install an unapproved add-on from a CRX or XPI file.
Our tutorial is for experienced users only and especially for developers. It’s particularly useful if you’re developing your own extension and need to test it. If you’re installing an extension someone else created, be sure you know exactly what you’re doing.

Google Chrome
- For installing the extension outside the Chrome Web Store, you require a file extension of .crx.
- In Linux & Chrome OS, you can directly install the extension by just dragging & dropping. But in Windows & Mac OS you can load an unpacked extension only via developer mode.
- You need to extract the extension in the folder please uploading.
- Now, go to Chrome setting -> Extensions (chrome://extensions) -> Click on developer mode on the right side corner
- Later click on Load unpacked extension -> Browse through the folder -> and open it.
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla by default limits the users to install add-ons only from its extensions gallery or add-ons which are signed by Mozilla. But Mozilla has developed a special version of Firefox named "Firefox Developer Edition" that comes with build-in developer options and also allows to install the custom addons
- To do so, type about:config into Firefox’s address bar and press Enter.
- Search for “xpinstall.signatures.required”,
- Double-click the “xpinstall.signatures.required” setting. It will now be set it to “False”.
- Now take the Firefox extension and drop it on Firefox extension page to install it automatically.
