How To 'Screen Capture' in Windows

The captioned subject may sound a bit fundamental to many of our readers, but it is observed that even this basic function is beyond comprehension of some of our friends while working on Windows. The questions that may justifiably come up in one’s mind is: Why do we need to take screen shot or screen capture? What are the utilities of such an effort?
Screen Shot
‘Screenshot’ is the act of capturing the picture of your desktop or anything it shows generally in its entirety in static form. It is thus a picture of your computer screen. One reason for taking a screenshot is to explain things that one cannot possibly do by words alone. An example could be of a software as it would look like on the screen. In software tutorial too, where you intend to put up presentations through maps and diagrams, you may as well put up the screenshots to illustrate your points of view. It becomes easy to understand for ‘do-it-yourself’ training. Further, one resorts to screenshots of snippets if these are difficult to reproduce through other means.

One may need a screenshot from out of three options available to him: when he simply wants to capture a screenshot and save it as a document. The second option is when he takes a shot but does not want to save it, and finally when he takes a screenshot of only one window instead of the entire screen. In the first instance, where he wants to take a screenshot and save it as a file, the steps are as follows –
  • Press Windows + PrtScn keys at the same time
  • The file is saved in Print Screen under in the Picture folder
  • You may now rename the document for easy identification
The file is saved for the user to use, as and when necessary. In case, he does not wish to save it as a file, the procedure to be adopted is still simpler. All he needs to do is to just press PrtScn  button to copy the screen, and paste it at a place he wants.
In the third instance, where he wants to take a snapshot of only one window – and not the entire screen – the procedure will be to tap or click the window concerned and then press Alt + PrtScn  buttons. The picture can then be pasted at the desired place.
