We are seemingly so happy about the present status of technology, more especially the Information technology that we rarely think of those who are behind all these innovations and developments. The world at large is concerned more about the end-product, the technology involved, but what about those who are instrumental in bringing them out? Those who are associated with IT are generally perceived to be studious, workaholics and no-nonsense guys, who are reportedly cut-off from the outside world.
These thick glass-wearing fixed-gazed persons are usually found glued to the screen with little sense of humor. The few quotations on technologies reproduced below are meant to cheer them up – to tell them that a subject which apparently looks dreary and monotonous to the outside world – has a lighter vein too.
Some of the simple quotes like those explaining hardware and software could be amusing. Here is an example: ‘Those parts of the system that you can hit with a hammer are called hardware; those program instructions that you can only curse at are called software. Interesting, isn’t it? Another simple witticism from Senator Bob Dole, saying that the internet is a great way to get on the net, would be perceived as too simplistic. Nonetheless, the quotes do provide differing perspectives of those who watch from the side-lines. A classic quote is that of Archibald Putt. He says: ‘Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage and those who manage what they do not understand’.
Andy Rooney however seems cynical when he says: Computers make it easier to do a lot of things, but most of the things they make it easier to do don't need to be done’. Some appear to be more on firmer grounds. Examples are that of Elbert Hubbard who says: One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. There are indeed endless quotes on IT and technology, but here I would conclude with the one from Alan J. Perlis who opines that a year spent in artificial intelligence is enough to make one believe in God. Superb!
