Instagram, an acquisition of Facebook, is an online mobile sharing application that facilitates sharing of photos, videos etc. through a number of social networking platforms, like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr etc. The advertisements on Instagram so far had been fairly restricted to big advertisers. This approach has changed now. Instagram has turned pretty serious about giving a boost to its revenue and has opened up to advertisers – small, medium and big - worldwide. It has become global in the real sense when it increased its advertising capability from 8 to 38 markets recently.
Instagram is experimenting with the new approach by adding up 30 new markets, including India. The users – numbering around 300 million worldwide - will now view advertisements in different format, including video clips. The video clips for instance would contain ads for up to 30 seconds, thereby giving an option to individuals and advertisers to opt for Instagram advertisement instead of going for TV advertisement. This would consequently mean that the advertisers can simply port their television commercials into Instagram ads.

Instagram believes that the advertisers want to drive business results across a variety of objectives – from awareness and message association to website visits and offline sales, and its add formats will evolve to serve all these goals. This would not only serve the interest of advertisers but the community as well since people would be able to learn of the product and services, and can straightaway sign-up on a website for buying a product or availing the services. It will thus be empowering the businesses on the one hand and the consumers/users on the other.
