Here is a bombshell for all those who are addicted to internet. Hold your breath – in about eight years, scientists say, the internet could be reaching its capacity. In fact, looking at the present rate of internet use, it can be said with certainty that the internet is indeed heading towards a ‘capacity crunch’ and could reach its limit in just 8 years. A very alarming future of internet awaiting us, indeed.
It could be elucidated, in simpler terms, that the cable and fibre optics, which relay information to our gadgets, like laptop, smart-phone, tablet, etc. have been taking a heavy load. Added to these are the use of internet television, streaming services and modern-day more powerful equipments and computers, which have increased strain on our communications infrastructure to a substantial extent. Reckoned at the present rate of internet usage, it is estimated, the internet will hardly be able to take any further data from a single optical fibre, thereby resulting in a web-crisis.
A meeting at the Royal Society has been scheduled for the 11th May which would see several leading engineers, physicists and telecom firms deliberate on possible steps for averting a web-crisis. Professor Andrew Ellis, co-organiser of the Meet, has been quoted by Daily Mail of having said: "Demand is increasingly catching up. It is growing again and again, and it is harder and harder to keep ahead. We have done very well for many years to keep ahead. But we are getting to that point where we can't keep going for ever."
One way out for the internet companies would be to put in additional cables but that could escalate the charges substantially. The users may be required to either pay additional charges at double the rate or have to face a situation where an internet would switch off intermittently. The options are few and limited. Let us hope, a viable solution to the coming web-crisis is found soon enough.
