Lenovo revealed its LaVie Z series of notebooks recently, which may well prove an important landmark in the industry’s quest for more lightweight note books. There has of late been a trend for slimmer, more streamlined and light-weight notebooks, where the buyer does not want to compromise on important features. Apple’s Macbook ruled the roost for long in the sphere of thinner and slimmer Macbook.

Now, if compared with the latest notebook of Lenovo unveiled at CES (Lenovo LaVie HZ550), Macbook’s newest entry would still win the race on the sphere of thickness – 0.52 inch as compared to Lenovo’s 0.7 inch. On the issue of weight however Lenovo’s lightest version is lighter – only about 780g (1.7 lbs) in weight as against 12-inch Macbook (new version) weighing about 920g (over 2 lbs). The models, LaVie Z and LaVie Z 360 are priced at USD 1,499 and USD 1,699 respectively.
The notebooks are preloaded with 8.1 Windows and are equipped with 5th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor and up to 8 GB memory. With WQHD display (2560 x 1440), the units are sleek and good looking. LaVie Z 360 model has multi touch display as well. The notebooks are powered by 6-cell Li-polymer battery that gives an uninterrupted 7 hours of video playback. Connectivity options include WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI-out, a SD card reader, and a combo headphone and mic jack.
