Electric cars are slowly getting acceptable among Indian commuters, primarily because of two major factors – low running cost and environmental benefits. A number of car manufacturers are quite naturally entering the electric vehicle arena with advanced electric cars giving feasible options to car buyers. Mahindra’s Reva (Mahindra e2o) is now hitting the Indian roads in major cities. The company, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle Pvt Ltd., a part of the Mahindra Group, has already launched its electric car in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. Hyderabad is likely to be covered shortly.
The car is a two-door hatch back with sitting capacity of four, and is powered by 19 KW @ 3750 rpm. The torque is 53.9 N-m (0-3400 rpm). It would run on 48V maintenance free lithium-ion battery. The dimension of the vehicle in terms of length, width and height are 3280mm x 1514mm x 1580 mm. The Kerb weight is just 830 kgs. The top speed of the vehicle is 80 kms per hour and will run for 120 kms on a full charge in ideal road condition. It takes about 5 hours to charge the car fully.

While launching the vehicle in Hyderabad recently, the Company’s CEO, Arvind Mathew said that the Mahindra aimed at making the car quite accessible and easy to use for the customers in the city. He further disclosed that timely intervention by the Central Government through the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme helped boost the Electric Vehicle sector of the automobile industry. He further said that Mahindra sold over 5,000 electric vehicles globally, out of which about 1,000 have been sold in India.
With a view to promoting the electric vehicle and in the backdrop of recent scheme of Government incentive, the company has slashed its prices by 16 per cent or by about Rs 90,000. The vehicle would thus be priced at around Rs 5.00 lacs (ex-show room)
