You will recollect that about four years ago, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was offered as an option to the mobile user. This was a service available to a mobile phone user to switch over from one service provider to another within the limits of the telecom service area. Now another good news! The National Mobile Number Portability (NMNP) has recently been launched, which would in essence mean that a mobile user can now get his mobile number ported from one service area to another.
A person for instance moving from Kolkata to Pune need not surrender his mobile number – he can now retain his original number even on his moving out. Thus, with the launch of NMNP last Friday, ‘One Number One Nation’ mantra has become a reality now. Although the MNP has so far been available only within the limitation of the particular Service Area, MNMP would enable the telephone users to conveniently switch over to the area of their relocation without any hindrance. It will naturally benefit millions of people all around the country – especially those who are on transferable jobs.

The benefits are many – the users will not be required to go for new SIM with new number, nor will they need to pay the roaming charges. The mobile tariff will become all the more competitive. Rajan Mathews, Director General of the Cellular Operators of India, concedes that the exercise of putting together 22 telecom service areas involved major effort. He said: ‘It has been a very complex exercise with 5,00,000 towers and switches, two MNP providers and mobile operators, but we are ready now.’
Some of the most prominent operators have already begun publicising their readiness to offer seamless porting services. While in real terms, the operators would lose in earning on account of decreasing roaming revenues, the customers (users) will certainly stand to gain from the NMNP.
