The world as we speak is expanding, so is the Lumia line from Nokia. We saw two new smartphone additions, Lumia 1520 and 1320 as well as a tablet – Lumia 2520. The tablet’s specs are solid and the design is one of a kind that makes you wanna hold it forever. Without any further adieu, the review begins.
Hardware
The Lumia 2520 is the first tablet from Nokia and it features the Windows 8.1 RT version which is NOT the full Windows 8.1. It will be available on AT&T and Verizon for $399 on a 2-year contract or you can own it completely with no strings attached for $499. So how is the tablet? Well one thing is for sure, the display is the best we’ve seen so far, with bright colors, spot-on saturation and amazing contrast levels. It’s a 10 inch, Full HD 1920x1080 with Clear Black Technology on top. The screen on Lumia 2520 out-classes the one found on the Surface 2 which has an amazing screen so you get the idea. It has a 6.7MP Zeiss Lens at the back with f/1.9 so great for low light shots although it lacks the OIS which is really not necessary. On the front you have a Windows capacitative button which doesn’t light up though but provides a haptic feedback so that’s good. On the top you have a microSD card slot, sim card slot both which are accessible using the sim door key and then the power button and volume controls. At the bottom sit 2 ports – MicroUSB 3.0 and MicroHDMI but no full size USB which is found on the Surface Tablets. Comes with NFC and Red is glossy with other colors being Matte finished. Enough of the external, lets take a look in the inside. Powered by a 2.3 Ghz Quad Core Snapdragon 800 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM, the tablet runs Windows 8.1 RT like a breeze. It has 32GB internal storage with expandibility upto 64GB via a microSD card slot.
Software
Qualcomm was pretty serious when they said that S800 would run Windows 8.1 RT very smoothly and the words stick. Its not the app load times or the graphics but the fluidity in small animations like when swiping from right or bottom which is very really smooth and silky, is what differentiates the Lumia 2520 from the Surface Tablets. Now being a Nokia device it comes with exclusive goodies like HERE Maps, Nokia Music which is the tweaked version and MyNote, Nokia Camera and Nokia Storyteller. On Microsoft's behalf it comes with RT versions of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Other than that, the apps available on the Windows Store are pretty limited - both in functionality and number. You get 25GB of storage when you boot it up and only 17GB when you update and install a bunch of apps. Thankfully you have a microSD card for expansion upto 64GB.
Camera & Battery Life
Honestly, the 6.7 MP Carl Zeiss Lens will win no awards and its not meant to either but don't underestimate the f/1.9 lens. With Nokia Camera you get tweaking options like ISO, Exposure, Shutter Speed and White Balance. Photos are clear and crisp in broad day light and the 1080p video is perfect. The front 2MP does the chat part and its great for selfies unless you don't have a problem holding a 10inch tablet at unusual angles. The Non-removable 8000mAH battery which Nokia claims to give 10 hours of battery life is very true and apart from that we also found the stand-by time to be excellent if you're gonna let the tablet hibernate for a few days in the bag-pack for a couple of days, it should be good. Gaming and work shouldn't compromise the battery life as long as the brightness is turned down to minimum or atleast auto.
Conclusion
So wrapping it up, we'd its a solid device and a very good effort from Nokia. Its got a gorgeous display, 4G/LTE connectivity, amazing battery life and pretty good cameras on it too. All very feeatures but still not quite the charmer especially with odd placing of the buttons and lack of full USB port are the main game changers. So because of that, we're all excited to se what's coming next from Nokia and for $399 on contract, its a solide effort from the company and most people will be happy with it.
