Sony’s Smart Glasses, called SmartEyeglass, is back in news. It is now known that that Sony has begun taking orders for its Smart Glasses in UK and Germany. In the process Sony has pushed off Google’s Glass from out of the race, which had earlier priced its gadget at USD 1,500. Incidentally, Google has shut down commercial sale of its wearable display last month itself. Sony’s device will be costing virtually half (USD 850 or around INR 52,300) of what Google had priced its product.
Sony declared recently that SmartEyeglass would be released in early March exclusively for developers and industrial applications. The commercial production however is slated for release in the year 2016 only. Sony’s spokeswoman in response to queries explained: “As a hands-free device, SmartEyeglass can be a promising product with many practical uses, but since we need to explore applications at this stage, we are releasing this developer edition.”

The device (SmartEyeglass) weighing 77g. will be internet connected and will contain an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, image and brightness sensors, 3-megapixel camera and a microphone. It can display low-resolution monochrome images and text like messages, etc. on the lenses, thereby overlaying the information on the user's field of view. The company said that the lenses of 3mm thickness would have an 85 percent light transmittance rate, thereby making the objects appear quite clear and distinct.
Pre-orders for SmartEyeglass are now being accepted in the above noted countries. The device having black framed glasses are compatible with Android operating systems. The initial model will come with SDK (Software Development Kit) for encouraging the developers to design suitable apps for it.
