Now that Sundar Pichai is firmly saddled as CEO of Google, it will be in fitness of things to know about the man who would be heading the decision making body of this IT giant. Google went for a restructuring this week when it was made a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. While the parent company will have Larry Page as its CEO, Sundar Pichai will be the CEO of Google.
Sundar Pichai was born in Chennai. His father, Reghunatha Pichai, was an Engineer working for the British company, GEC. Sundar, as he was widely known, his parents and a younger brother stayed in a modest two-bedroom flat in the city. During his school-days, he took keen interest in cricket and played as captain of the school team. He was instrumental in bringing a number of victories to the team in the region. His father was his guide, who introduced him to the arena of technology. No wonder, he developed an aptitude and liking for technology from an early age.

He studied at IIT, Kharagpur in the stream of metallurgical engineering, and was considered to be the brightest student in his entire batch. Soon he got a scholarship at Stanford. However, raising loan for his travel and other expenses proved to be a major problem. His father ultimately had to withdraw a sizeable amount – more than his annual salary - from his family savings. He however dropped out of Stanford to work as an Engineer and Product Manager at a semi-conductor manufacturer at the Silicon Valley, USA. Meanwhile he got an MBA from Wharton in 2002 and also had a stint at McKinsey as a Consultant.
Google he joined almost 21 years ago in 2004 and became a part of the team that worked on Google search toolbar. He was instrumental in developing the Chrome for Android. After the purchase of Android, the CEO handed it over to Pichai for optimisation and integration. And today, looking to his talent, exposure and achievements, he is on top of Google. Well done, Pichai!
