Tesla Motor’s Model S has taken a march against its contemporaries in several spheres. The car has the highest safety rating in the United States. Unlike fuel-consuming vehicles with hundreds of moving parts, this electric vehicle has only one moving part (the rotor), thereby giving instantaneous acceleration from zero to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds (for the best model). As a result, the vehicle is both silent and smooth. Incredible!
The car is autopilot equipped, which means it has a forward looking camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors with real time traffic updates to automatically drive it on the open road and in intense stop-and-go traffic. It automatically follows the road, steering around curves and varying its speed to match the flow of traffic. It can automatically change lanes by tapping the turn signal. The car gets aware of its surroundings and warns the driver when merging into an occupied lane or approaching a stopped car too quickly. In emergency conditions, it comes to a total stop on its own. When it arrives at the destination, the vehicle will not only detect a parking spot but will also automatically park itself. Standard equipment safety features constantly monitor stop signs, traffic signals and pedestrians, as well as for unintentional lane changes.

Tesla’s Model S is available in three variants. The one with 60 kWh batteries has 120 mph top speed with 208 mile range, while the car with 85 kWh batteries can run at 140 mph top speed with 265 mile range. Both these variants have 380 hp motor power. The third variant (P85D) with 60 kWh battery has 691 hp motor power and has 155 mph top speed and a range of 253 miles. All the variants have 8 years battery and drive unit warranty.
Although electric cars have so far not gained much acceptance in India, Tesla is expected to enter Indian market soon. We need to wait to see how these vehicles are received here in the country, and whether that will bring about a radical change in preferences for electric powered vehicle.
