Well friends, many of you are used to the ubiquitous mobile operating system (OS), called Android. This OS has over the last five years caught the imagination of smart-phone users, and has quite popular, in so much so that during the last year the market share of Android
has been overwhelmingly high as compared to any other OS in the market. It has indeed made a name for itself with several versions coming out in quick succession, one after another. The last in the series is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The good news is that a new-open source operating system has now emerged in the horizon, named Tizen, that would be applicable for smart-phones, tablets, smart TVs, etc. The system is backed by Samsung and Intel. The main components of Tizen are the Linux Kernel and the Webkit runtime. While source code and SDK of Tizen 2.0 have recently been released, it is still a far cry to know the acceptability of the new OS at this stage . It may be of interest to know that the main feature of this OS is its compatability on multiple platforms, which means that if one creates an application for Tizen, it would run on android, IOS and windows mobile as well without any modification.
One thing is very clear. With Tizen jumping into the fray, the competition amongst the various OS – more specifically Android and Tizen - will certainly intensify. The end-user would exercise the option to go for the best of them. Thus, the real beneficiary of the war of supremacy amongst the OS would certainly be the end-users.
