The internationally known online taxi-hailing company, Uber, has chalked out a plan to establish a Centre at Hyderabad and make major investment of around Rs 317 crores (50 million US dollar) over a period of five years. It has in this connection signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this week with the Government of Telangana, spelling out its plan of training, employment and revenue generation for hundreds of people over a period of five years. Interestingly, outside its home country of the US, Uber’s investment in Hyderabad is likely to be the highest.
The plan envisages job creation for thousands in coordination with the Government, by opening up socio-economic and entrepreneurial opportunities. It will also collaborate with the Telangana Academy for Skills and Knowledge (TASK) in identifying and training 2000+ candidates and hiring 500+ people in a phased manner. The Company also proposes under its Vehicle Finance Programme to provide economic opportunities for first-time vehicle ownership through the help of TASK.
Uber, which came to Hyderabad barely 16 months ago, has in fact revolutionised urban mobility with its online Innovative technology of safe, reliable and efficient travel. It not only provided employment opportunities to hundreds of Hyderabadis but has also offered flexibility in running the vehicles in accordance to the drivers’ conveniences. The major expansion plan of the Company, it is expected, will bring about transformation in the lives of thousands of people in the city. Speaking on the occasion of the signing of MOU, Siddharth Shanker, General Manager, Hyderabad, Uber said, “Shri K T Rama Rao Garu, Hon’ble Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj has shown great vision by supporting innovation and embracing choice. This is an outstanding example of what can be achieved when the private and the public sector work together with the best interests of the local communities at heart to bridge the digital divide in line with Prime Minister Modi’s Digital India initiative.”
