Conflicting claims backed by Canalys and GfK may look confusing and may make one wonder as to the real figures, and as to who tops the list. We however leave at just that. The future may reveal more.
There is a raging controversy now as to which smart-phone is the leading one in the Indian market? A recent report issued on the 3rd Feb. from the research firm, Canalys claims that Samsung – the South Korean giant - has lost ground to the budget smart-phone maker, Micromax for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2014. Samsung disputed the claim on Wednesday, asserting that it still commands the most dominant position. It maintains that Samsung’s market-share of sale of all smart-phones in India is more than 40 per cent.
India has the second highest number of mobile-phones, only next to China, and as such is a lucrative market that cannot be undermined. The market is growing at a rapid pace, which could be evident from the fact that during the period under reference (fourth quarter of last year), the sale surged by as much as 90% as compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year. As against a total sale of around 21.6 million smart-phones sold in India, as per the report, the share of Samsung has been only 20 per cent while that of Micromax is estimated to be 22 per cent. Canalys attributes this upheaval to low-cost budget smart-phones from Micromax, saying that almost 25 per cent of smart-phones sold in India during the period was of a cost below USD 100.
Samsung in a statement asserted that the company’s volume market share during the above referred period was 34.3 per cent. It quoted market research firm GfK’s data (said to be based on actual sales) to claim that during the year 2014, its volume market share has been 35.7 per cent. In addition, the value share of the company reached 40.2 per cent, which ‘is more than four times the next player’, meaning Micromax.
