The Telecom Services sector is effectively working on a system to offer Wi-Fi hot-spots in cities and tourist centres of India. The Department of Telecom has held a conference of telecom operators recently for chalking out further plans. It has yet to decide whether the services will be free of charge or available at a cost.
The scheme of Wi-Fi hotspots is part of the Digital India programme approved by the government of India that seeks to transform the country into a digitally empowered economy as also a hub of digital knowledge. The programme includes project that aims to guarantee availability of government services to citizens electronically where people get the advantage of the latest information and communication technology. The government plan under “Digital India project” includes establishment of ICT (Information and communication technology) infrastructure like high speed Internet at the level of gram panchayats.
This programme of development will cover various projects that would cost about Rs. 1 lakh crore to transform the country into a digitally empowered entity. It will be implemented from the current year and will be closely monitored by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The Committee will be headed by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
