Windows as an OS started its journey almost three decades back. With a modest beginning in the eighties, it has become a common name with its Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. While, the market share of Windows desktop OS (all versions taken together) stands at more than 90 per cent, the share of Windows 8 and 8.1 has gone down of late.
One of the possible reasons is its full sized start menu with tiles that did not find favour with most of the users. In the backdrop of these developments, Microsoft was toying with the idea of launching of a revised version of Windows, which will address issues raised by the users, as also to have a device unification plan. The newer version of OS – named Windows 10 - will not only be valid for desktops and laptops, but will also be applicable for all other devices like tablets, smartphones, etc.

Windows 10 Operating System is likely to be launched next year – in 2015. It would have Touch-focussed interface instead of the full-screen Start Menu of Windows 8/8.1. With a view to seeking professional-advices and feedback, Microsoft has started a novel plan, Windows Insider Programme. The PC experts and IT professionals will be given access to pre-release software for Windows 10 Technical Preview for desktops and laptops. They may join Windows Insider Programme and gain access to pre-release builds of Windows 10.
On joining the Windows Insider Programme, they can download Technical Preview and make their own experiments to provide suitable feedback. Needless to mention, the members of Windows Insider Committee will automatically receive the new builds when released.It may be mentioned in this connection that Windows 10 Technical Preview should not be used for daily use, since this is only there for experimental purposes. One needs to have a spare machine to make experiments, do a review and offer suggestions; and wait till the final update is released.
For the purpose of downloading the Technical Preview, the basic requirement is to have a stable internet connection, Windows 8.1 OS and a Microsoft account. This apart, the user needs to have a one GHz processor, 1 GB RAM (x86) or 2 GB RAM (64 bit machine), 16 GB of storage space and DirectX 9 or above graphics device. He has also to ensure that all important data are duly backed up against possible loss through experimentation.
