We are all so much used to Windows that today anyone speaking about computers and laptops realise how vital it has become now as a word processing application. The development of Windows to the present stage of Windows 8.1 hasa been through a long and interesting process of continuous evolution spreading over almost three decades.
It is interesting to note that by the mid eighties, WordStar 4.0 became a popular word-processing application. It went through several versions till the Windows began catching the imagination of the computer-users. The first widely acceptable word-processor in this category was Word 2.0 entering the market in around 1986. Soon thereafter Windows 2.1 was launched in two different versions, viz. Windows/286 and Windows/386. In 1990, Windows 3.0 was launched with improved design, better user interface and greater memory. Naturally, it became an instant hit.

The year 1995 saw the entry of Windows 95 with a host of user-friendly features. The user interface got a face-lift with several major modifications like Program Manager turning into Start Menu, Taskbar and Windows Explorer. Needless to say, the version proved quite a big success. Windows 95 was followed up by Windows 98 in the middle of 1998 with several updated features.
The later versions came up with Internet Explorer 5.0 and Windows Media Player 6.2. Thus Windows 98 remained in style till the next versions, Windows 2000 NT and Windows ME, were released towards the end of 2000. The introduction of additional features continued with every new version, and the progress of development of Windows proved steady all through.

Windows XP - released in October 2001 - proved to be a major development in the horizon of Windows that claimed to be altogether different experiment for Windows users. It provided a number of new features and came up with several innovative ideas. The Home Edition was the basic version, while the Professional Edition with added features was meant for more serious users. In the row after these versions were Windows Vista and Windows 7. The latter version – with improved design and released about five years back – was made compatible with a host of applications. It got ready supporters amongst the users.

The present breed of Windows (comprising of Windows 8, 8.1 and 8.1 pro), which were released over a period of last two years, made significant changes in design and look. The start screen with tiles – small, medium and large – gave an innovative appearance.The user interface and its compatibility with a number of applications made it quite user-friendly. The touch-screen optimisation feature too gave it a better rating.
This is how Windows travelled from the eighties to the present stage with host of changes, innovations and breakthroughs. One doesn’t know what more are on store in the coming years. Let’s wait and watch.
