While modern technology has seen smartphones, tablets and wearables, etc. go beyond one’s imagination with features that were unthinkable till recently, it did not succeed as much in the arena of power backup. The battery-power remained abysmally poor for a gadget to operate under normal condition for even one full day. In the backdrop of such a situation, there are reasons to cheer up now, as the recent evolution of batteries promises to pack ample power in smaller spaces.
The ubiquitous lithium ion batteries have not changed much for more than two decades. Things are getting better with experiments going on in favour of solid state batteries, which could store virtually twice as much energy as a conventional battery would do. This would give a power boost to not only the wearables, mobiles and tablets, but would go well beyond that to battery operated machines, like electric motorcars. Not that the solid state battery is a recent development – it is there for quite some time – the element has been in use in wireless sensors. The major problem was its prohibitive cost that precluded its use extensively in many areas.

In the case of solid-state batteries, the liquid electrolytes normally used in conventional lithium-ion batteries are replaced with solid ones. This makes it possible to replace conventional electrodes with lithium metal ones, which hold far more energy. As a matter of fact, Solid-state electrolytes can prove to be a real game-changer, creating almost a perfect battery, eventually solving issues like battery lifetime, safety, and cost. Incidentally, costs are steadily coming down steadily. It is expected that work on the advanced technology would soon bring out batteries that would prove a boon to the use of your gadgets.
